The Annual Meeting was held at 6:30 p.m. on December 4, 2003, at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Des Moines, Iowa. President Jones called the meeting to order and Glenn Conatser provided an invocation.
The minutes of the December 6, 2002 Annual Meeting were presented as published in the 2002 Record of Proceedings of the National Swine Improvement Federation Conference and Annual Meeting, Volume 27. Max Rothschild moved and John Mabry seconded to accept the minutes as written. Motion carried. Rodney Goodwin, Auditing Committee member, reviewed the financial statement prepared by Treasurer Stalder. He stated that all transactions were consistent with the business of the Federation. The statement showed a checking account balance of $6,113.80 and a savings balance of $5,821.74 in the form of a money market account with the total available resources of $11,935.54. It was moved by Rodney Goodwin, seconded by Steve Moeller, and unanimously passed that the treasurer's report be accepted.
President Jones thanked all sponsors of the 2003 NSIF Conference and Annual Meeting. He individually recognized each sponsor. They included: Babcock Genetics, Genetic Improvement Services, Genetiporc U.S.A., Monsanto Choice Genetics, National Genetic Technology, National Swine Registry, Newsham Swine Genetics, Pig Improvement Company, S & S Programming, and Swine Genetics International. Stalder noted that conference support from these sponsors allows NSIF to be able to hold outstanding conferences. Their support is truly appreciated by conference attendees and the NSIF membership.
President Jones turned the podium over to Dr. Rodney Goodwin. He read the citation for Mr. Dale Miller of the National Hog Farmer magazine, the 2003 NSIF Charles Stanislaw Memorial Distinguished Service Award. Jones and Goodwin presented Mr. Miller with a plaque for his dedication and hard work for NSIF and its ideals. Dr. Tom Baas of Iowa State University then read a citation for Doug Newcom of Iowa State University, the 2003 NSIF Lauren Christian Memorial Graduate Student Award. Nelda Christian along with Baas and Jones presented Newcom with a plaque and a $500 award.
Secretary / Treasurer Ken Stalder presented Dr. Gordon Jones was recognized for his 2 years of service as president of the National Swine Improvement Federation. Jones was presented a plaque in recognition of that honor.
President Jones announced that the 2004 NSIF Conference and Annual Meeting would be held December 9 - 10, in Ames, IA. He indicated that the meeting would be held in conjunction with a genetic symposia held in honor of Dr. Lauren Christian. He thanked several of the Iowa State University faculty present for graciously agreeing to assist in hosting this meeting.
President Jones recognized outgoing Board of Director members Steve Moeller and Russ Nugent.
Ron Bates moved, Todd See seconded, and the motion passed that the meeting be adjourned.
Following the meeting, Dr. Patrick Webb of the Iowa Department of Agriculture gave a thought provoking talk on Animal Disease Disaster and the scenario that would play out if a catastrophic animal disease were to hit the U.S.
