The National Swine Improvement Federation has, as its primary function, developing and implementing more uniform, effective and coordinated swine improvement programs. Its members include, but are not limited to, seedstock producers, central test stations, swine testing organizations, A.I. studs and other seedstock production and marketing groups.

Each year the Federation holds a conference and annual meeting during which the impact and application of swine breeding technology is reviewed and updated. The publication of the proceedings of these conferences serves to advance the Federation's objective of improved genetic evaluation programs.

The 1995 conference was held in Clive, Iowa, on the outskirts of Des Moines, on December 1-2. The swine breeders roundtable held on Friday, December 1 and the program on Saturday, December 2, were an in-depth review of pork quality with presentations on the chemical, physical and genetic parameters associated with those muscle traits that ultimately influence the selection of pork products by the consumer. The complete program included presentations by leading authorities from both universities and industry and addressed quality considerations throughout the entire pork chain.

The program committee for the conference was chaired by Tom Baas, Iowa State University. Jim Schneider, Babcock Swine, Inc., served as chairperson for the breeders roundtable. Rodney Goodwin, National Pork Producers Council, assisted with local arrangements. The Federation acknowledges the contributions of each of these individuals to the success of the 1995 conference.

We hope these proceedings will be useful and informative. Additional copies of both this and previous proceedings are available from the office of the Secretary-Treasurer. Copies of the Swine Genetics Handbook, containing seventeen fact sheets can also be purchased from the Secretary at $5.00 each.

Elsewhere in these proceedings you will find a list of the 1995-96 officers, directors and acting committees of the Federation. If you wish to communicate with any of these because of a mutual interest or concern, please do not hesitate to do so. Also, if I can be of any assistance please contact me.
